Public Programs
The mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross is to ensure humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed conflict. As the guardian of the Geneva Conventions, the organization takes action on behalf of prisoners, the wounded and sick, and civilians affected by armed conflict.
The following lectures are open to the public and explore issues experienced amid today’s conflicts around the world. All programs will be located at the Presidio Officers’ Club.
Journalists on Dangerous AssignmentFriday, July 25, 2 p.m.
This program will take a closer look at the role of the media in conflict areas and how the international community works together to ensure the voices of those affected are heard through the chaos of armed conflict. Panel Moderator: Dana King, KPIX TV
Providing Relief for the Displaced
Thursday, July 31, 12 p.m.
Designed especially for those individuals and organizations that provide support to the refugee and immigrant communities in northern California, this program offers an overview of Red Cross tracing services and details on how to engage the Red Cross in reconnecting families.
Crimes of War
Friday, August 1, 2 p.m.
This program will explore the tenants of international humanitarian law, discuss how war criminals are brought to justice and share what the world’s citizens can do to help end suffering in war. Panel Moderator: James Armstead, JD, Stanford University
Exploring Humanitarian Law Educator Training
August 14 – 15
Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is a teacher curriculum produced by American Red Cross with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This program will provide certified teachers with the tools to expose students (ages 13-18) to issues of humanitarian law and principles of respect for life and dignity, especially in situations of armed conflict.
